2000 Domaine de la Folie Rully
Premier
Cru AOC Burgundy "Clos Saint-Jacques"
This graceful 16th century estate sits on
top the Montagne de la Folie. The domaine is the northernmost in the Rully
appellation, and its vineyards are the highest in elevation. The 4.2 acre
Clos Saint-Jacques vineyard was planted in the early 1950s on a limestone
hillside with excellent exposure. The vines are low yielding,
hand-harvested, and rank among the most impeccably tended vineyards in the
Cote Chalonnaise.
The Wine Advocate (Oct-03) rated this
Chardonnay 90 points and described it as, "Oak-infused stones and pears
can be detected in the aromatics of the outstanding 2000 Rully Clos
St.-Jacques... Lush, opulent, super-rich, and velvety-textured, this is a
medium-bodied wine packed with buttered minerals, creamed pears, and oak
spices." Pairs with shellfish,
white fish and poultry.

2000 Chateau de Premeaux Bourgogne
AOC Burgundy
Premeaux is located in
the Nuits-Saint-Georges appellation, and is named for a chateau destroyed
before the French Revolution. Alain Pelletier took over the family
property in 1983. He instituted vigorous vineyard pruning and stopped
fining or filtering. This Pinot Noir was seasoned in new oak barrels (a
rare practice for simple Bourgogne wine), and offers flavors of dark red
fruits, soft tannins, and a lengthy finish. Pairs with beef, lamb, duck,
game, meat stews, pate and cheese.

1999
Chateau Lafite
Rothschild Pauillac AOC Bordeaux
Lafite Rothschild
created a wine with concentration and finesse in 1999 with a blend of 74%
Cabernet Sauvignon, 18.5% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 1.5% Petit Verdot.
Parker (Apr-02) rated it 95 points and stated, "This prodigious wine is
both elegant and intensely flavored, and almost diaphanous in its layers
that unfold with no heaviness. An opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied
by a complex bouquet of lead pencil, graphite, cedar, creme de cassis,
toast, and vanilla. It is medium-bodied, with extravagant layers of
richness yet little weight, and a finish that is all sweetness, ripeness,
and harmony." Wine Spectator (3/31/02) also rated it 95 points and stated,
"Complex aromas of blackberries, tobacco, spices and black licorice are
alluring in this full-bodied claret, with a solid core of fruit and silky
tannins. Long, caressing finish." 12.5% ABV. Take Home $229.99
