Banyuls lies in the extreme south of mainland France among spectacularly rocky coastline where mountains plunge steeply into the Mediterranean. This straw-colored sweet wine has undergone maturation in wooden casks, spent time exposed to the sun, then had a rest period in vats. The Hachette Wine Guide (2002) rated the Doux Paille three stars and a coup de coeur, stating, "The nose is expressively powerful and elegant, developing walnut, mild tobacco, hay, honey, and dried apricot aromas. An outstanding, full, and generous palate has apricot mingling with crystallized fruit and toast flavors leading to a long lingering rancio finish."
